Event Description

The Children Health Concern Society (CHCS/ CVCG, now The Health Concern Society, HCS) was formed in November 2007 with the aim of promoting the health of children in Hong Kong through the improvement of the Childhood Immunisation Programme (“CIP”). AWTC was appointed to be its consultant to carry out the advocacy campaign.

In view of the Scientific Committee’s recommendation and sustained advocacy and publicity efforts by CHCS/ CVCG (now CHS) to advocate a boarder coverage of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV), the Chief Executive announced his Policy Address to include the PCV in the Childhood Immunisation Programme (CIP) in 2008. In 2012, the Centre of Health Protection (CHP) announced that the government will adopt PCV13 into the CIP.

In March 2015, The CHP launched a one-off measure to allow eligible elderly people to be vaccinated with the remaining stock of PCV13 of the "Childhood PCV13 Booster Vaccination Programme".

In July 2016, the Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases updated recommendations on the use of pneumococcal vaccines for high-risk Individuals. Individuals with high risk conditions who have not received any pneumococcal vaccines should receive one dose of PCV13 followed by one dose of 23vPPV one year after the previous PCV13.

The way forward in the advocacy campaign on pneumococcal vaccination would be for a NIP for all aged 50 and above.

Event Description

Aiming at improving the quality of life of the thalassaemia suffering children, a team of medical doctors, patients’ parents and carers, enthusiastic persons from the public established the Children’s Thalassaemia Foundation in 1993.

In the past, thalassaemia patients had to undergo blood transfusions every four months and injections of deferral to remove excess iron from their bodies. The treatment left patients suffering a poor quality of life. In 2010, AWTC has been appointed to work with TAHK to communicate with the healthcare authority and advocate to re-categorize the oral iron chelator, Exjade, as a first line drug. It greatly enhanced the patients’ quality of life.

Throughout the advocacy campaign, different stakeholders, namely the TAHK, paediatric doctors, legislators and medical KOLs were engaged.

In the 2011-12 Budget, a funding of $10 million had been allocated for thalassaemia patients under six years of age.

HK Marine Ecological Hotspot - Stakeholders Consultation (2018)
Client
WWF Hong Kong
Scope of Services
  • Stakeholders’ invitation and liaison
  • Meeting facilitation, analysis, reports
  • Event management
Event Description

Hong Kong is home to a broad diversity of coastal habitats but our marine ecosystem is facing a barrage of threats. Currently, only 2% of Hong Kong’s water is designated as Marine Protected Areas versus about 40% of land areas are country parks. Committed to the Convention on Biodiversity’s Aichi Target, WWF has been asking for designation of at least 10% of Hong Kong water as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) by 2020.

Establishment of MPAs is always not easy. Apart from the scientific evidence of their ecological importance, support from stakeholders and the communities is essential. In 2018, WWF has conducted a public engagement exercise in two phases to collect stakeholders’ views and concerns on conservation measures to be proposed in these hotspots. Eight engagement meetings were conducted in four districts, covering hundreds of stakeholders including rural residents, village representatives, district councilors, local green groups, hikers and ecotour operators, community centers and groups, professional and academic experts in marine, diving groups and water sports associations etc.
